“Like when we were forced to leave our homes the first time, we were forced out of this house. But this time was harder than during the Nakba. This time was like hellfire. We were fleeing while bullets surrounded us from every direction.”
75 years after her first displacement during the Nakba of 1948, Basma Abu Muailiq once again experienced the harrowing ordeal of displacement. In this video, 96-year-old Abu Muailiq recalls her first displacement, from her village of Khirbet Hasanat Abu Muailiq in the Beersheba district. She speaks of the moment she was forcibly expelled from her family land, and how she and her family turned from landowners to refugees in tents.
